Out of the frying pan and into the fire

By Nathan

Crunch!  "Come on guys let me have a carrot?" said Sid.  Sid was a small deer in an enclosure at South  Weald  Park. Sid was like a toy to all the other deer in the enclosure, his mother could not protect him either because she was as meek as a lamb, just like Sid. Sid could hardly get a crumb when the feeders came. The only thing he could have was soil!

Sid had lots of deer who bullied him, but he loathed Diego and Crash. They would never leave poor Sid alone, and worst of all they were always hurting him. They were either teasing him, tripping him over or just head-butting him. Diego and Crash were always near him even when he went to bed (whispering the horrible things they would do the next day.)

Sid had been bullied for months and he was now so nervous. He was also anxious about all of the carrots being dropped outside the enclosure, as were the other deer. What a waste!

A few nights later Sid thought that it would be great to get the carrots outside, instead of being pushed around. So that night, when all the other deer were sleeping, Sid wriggled his way out of the enclosure to reach the carrots and take them to the wild to live his life in solitude.  As he did this, all the deer could hear the rattle of the wire fence but only one came out to watch, the leader, Gandalf. He watched little Sid struggle bravely through the fence, but he said nothing.

As Sid picked up the carrots, he heard a menacing growl from behind him. He slowly turned his body round to see a great big black panther crouched ready to pounce. . . . . . . . . . . .
