9 Mar 2006 - Watoto

On Thursday, 9th March we hosted a visit from the 'Watoto' Children's African Choir. This wonderful group of children delighted pupils and staff with a wonderful performance during the afternoon and also spent some time with our children in class. In the evening they gave a wonderful, full concert to which everyone was invited.

A Note from Mrs. Joy

"A huge "Thank you" once again for the wonderful support given to the Watoto Children's Choir on their visit to the school last Thursday. The latest amount raised has been increased to £535.18 and we have secured 7 sponsorships. We also had a very good response to the sale of their jewellery, carvings, DVDs and CDs, so thank you very much indeed for your generosity. It is still possible to obtain copies of the CDs by contacting the School Office.

The story behind Watoto

In 1983, Gary and Marilyn Skinner, Canadian missionaries, moved with their family to Kampala, Uganda where they established an English-speaking church in the heart of the city.

In 1992, they were moved with compassion for Uganda's parentless children and started Watoto Child Care Ministries to address the Ugandan orphan crisis. "Watoto" (pronounced: wah-toe-toe) means "children" in Swahili. Watoto's Children's Villages consist of several single family dwellings that are constructed to provide shelter for eight parentless children and a housemother.

Since 1994, the Watoto Children's Choir has regularly toured the United States, Canada and Great Britain. Accompanied by a small team of adults, Watoto's performances are a blend of native African rhythms, contemporary gospel music and ethnic dance. Now, through their lively and inspiring performances, the Watoto Children's Choir shares their unique experiences, as well as their newfound joy and hope, which thrill and dazzle audiences everywhere!
